Frequently asked questions
- What is an F10 notification?
- An F10 is a formal notification to the Health and Safety Executive that a construction project is about to begin. It is required under CDM 2015 Regulation 6 for projects that exceed certain thresholds of duration or workforce size. The client (or someone acting on their behalf, such as the principal designer) must submit it before the construction phase starts.
- When does a project become notifiable?
- A project is notifiable if the construction work is expected to last more than 30 working days and have more than 20 workers on site at any one time, or exceed 500 person-days of construction work in total. If either threshold is met, the project must be notified.
- Who is responsible for submitting the F10?
- The client holds the duty to notify the HSE under CDM 2015 Regulation 6. The client may delegate the practical task to the principal designer or another competent person, but the legal duty remains with the client.
- What happens if I do not notify a notifiable project?
- Failure to notify is a criminal offence under CDM 2015. The HSE can issue enforcement notices and prosecute. There is no penalty for notifying a project that turns out to be non-notifiable, so if in doubt, notify.
